InformationSTAT™ Public Education tools
The InformationSTAT™ public education and communications toolkit is a fully customizable set of public relations and communications tools designed to enhance consumer understanding of the benefits of health IT and health information exchange (HIE). These public awareness tools can be used by leaders of state, regional and community initiatives to educate consumers about the real difference secure electronic health information exchange can have on the health and healthcare of Americans.
The tools and resources in InformationSTAT™ Program include downloadable public announcements for radio, "print-ready" artwork for advertisements and billboards, and case examples that can be used in brochures related to electronic health information exchange. In addition, an eHI Guide for Consumers on Secure Health Information Exchange has been developed to support the consumer engagement by state, regional and community-based initiatives.
Key Messages That Resonate With Consumers
Public Opinion Strategies LLC conducted attitude and opinion research which incorporated both focus groups and a telephone survey, targeting consumers to inform the key messages included in the InformationSTAT™ public education and communications toolkit. The top four messages that resonated with consumers when asked when they might want to have secure access to electronic health information were as follows:
- In an Emergency Medical Situation
- When You Are on Travel Out of State
- When You Visit Your Doctor
- During or After Natural Disasters
InformationSTAT™ Public Education Tools That Support Key Messages
Numerous public education and communications tools were developed with the assistance of Health2 Resources to support key messages that resonate with consumers, including downloadable public announcements for radio, print-ready artwork for advertisements and billboards, case examples that bring life to the key messages. These customizable tools are available free-of-charge to subscribers of the eHI Connecting Communities Toolkit.

Background
InformationSTAT™-a public education and communications toolkit, was developed by the eHealth Initiative Foundation with support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) which provided funds to strengthen Gulf Coast health care services and regional electronic health information infrastructure in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Public Opinion Strategies LLC conducted the attitude and opinion research to inform the messages included in the InformationSTAT™ Toolkit. Communications firm Health2 Resources played a key role in coordinating and overseeing the work. The communications-related components of the project were conducted over a 12-month period and supported by approximately $500,000.
