Congressman Gordon Introduces Patient I.T. Integration Bill

Bart Gordon (D-TN), Chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology ,has introduced legislation (HR 2406) that would authorize the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to establish standards and guidelines for interoperability of electronic health records (EHRs).

The bill will grant NIST greater authority to work with patients, physicians and vendors of health IT in order to assist in the development of standards across all areas of health information exchange, including standards on privacy and confidentiality.  The bill will also require NIST to work with federal agencies and the private sector to develop an interoperable system between agencies and their private sector transaction partners.
