eHealth Initiative congratulates Brailer on job well done

April 20, 2006, Washington, D.C.  The eHealth Initiative and its Foundation (eHI) offered its congratulations to the nation's first-ever national health information technology coordinator David Brailer, MD, PhD today, upon news of his resignation from his Department of Health and Human Services post, crediting the pioneer for two years of substantial progress towards an interconnected, market-based health information technology system underway that promises substantial improvements in safety and efficiency.  Brailer was appointed to the position by President George W. Bush on May 6, 2004.

eHI is the leading independent, non-profit organization which brings together multiple stakeholders to improve healthcare through the use of information and information technology.

We congratulate David Brailer on his leadership and contribution to raising awareness of the importance of information technology in improving the quality, safety and effectiveness of healthcare for America's patients, said Janet Marchibroda, chief executive officer of eHI.  Much groundwork has been laid through his leadership, the creation of the office, and the many contracts that were issued to support the development and adoption of standards for interoperability.

Brailer has embraced a guided market approach to the adoption of healthcare information technology by doctors, hospitals and other healthcare entities.  The approach has encouraged the formation and growth of more than 200 community, regional and state-based multi-stakeholder organizations across the country, each working to link healthcare information at the local level, with an end goal of an interoperable system of secure information transfer between markets.

Marchibroda said Brailer helped lay the foundation for the many changes now rapidly occurring at both the national and local levels, within both the private and public sectors.

Dr. Brailer's work has been instrumental in taking us many steps closer to making our vision of a higher quality, safer, more effective healthcare system enabled by information and information technology a reality, she said.
