Provide Leadership and Input on a Shared Vision, Principles, and Roadmap for Improving Health and Healthcare Through Health IT

"Being a member of the eHealth Initiative has provided our organization with the opportunity to contribute to the transformation of the healthcare industry and at the same time better serve our clients by providing them and the industry a realistic and beneficial path forward."

- Daniel Garrett
Managing Director,
Healthcare IT Practice, PriceWaterhouseCoopers

eHI's multi-stakeholder national membership is made up of more than 180 leading medical societies, employers, health plans, healthcare IT suppliers, hospitals and other providers, patient and consumer groups, pharmaceutical and device manufacturers, pharmacies, public health agencies, quality improvement organizations, and state and local organizations who are working together to both define and then implement common principles, policies and best practices for using health IT to support improvements in health and healthcare.  These stakeholders come together to form the diverse community that is eHI's membership. eHI has created a special place where there is mutual respect for the differences among stakeholders, and spirited dialogue directed towards consensus on incremental actions that will move the ball forward.

eHI is led by a multi-stakeholder Leadership Council, comprised of nationally recognized leaders representing every sector of healthcare, who provide strategic guidance to the organization's work. John Tooker, MD, MBA, FACP, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American College of Physicians serves as the 2006 eHealth Initiative President and Jeffrey Kang, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, CIGNA Healthcare, serves as the President of eHealth Initiative's Foundation.

eHI isn't just driving change at the national level. Supporting state and local efforts is also part of its mission. In 2005, eHI also launched the eHI Connecting Communities Membership, involving leaders representing more than 280 states, regions and communities. Led by J. Marc Overhage, MD, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer, Indiana Health Information Exchange and Micky Tripathi, PhD, President, Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative, this coalition, in which nearly every single state initiative in the United States is involved, meets monthly to identify common challenges, share best practices and provide feedback to the development of common principles, policies and practices.  The eHI Connecting Communities membership serves as an important mechanism, linking national policy, principles and strategies to efforts on the ground at the state and local levels.
