Michael L. Kappel is Senior Vice President, Government & Industry Relations for McKesson Provider Technologies. Mr. Kappel is responsible for developing business responses to emerging legislation and regulatory initiatives.  He previously served as Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning and Customer Strategies where he was responsible for overall product direction and integration efforts; long-range strategic planning and communicating product plans and goals to employees, customers, and to the industry. 

As Senior Vice President, Mr. Kappel brings more than 25 years of experience in healthcare strategic planning and business development.  During his career, Mr. Kappel  served in numerous key positions within the healthcare industry.  Prior to rejoining McKesson in 2002,  he held the position as Executive Vice-president of ProVation Medical Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota.  In addition, Mr. Kappel was chief executive officer of MedSpecialists, Inc., a start-up company that was acquired by ProVation in 2001. Mr. Kappel has held numerous key leadership positions over 16 years with McKessonHBOC and HBO & Company.  Those positions included corporate planning and business development, sales and customer service.  Mr. Kappel joined HBO & Company in 1985 when the company acquired Mediflex Systems Corporation.  Previous to Mediflex Systems, he held positions with Ernst and Young's Management Consulting Services.

As an active member in many of the healthcare industry's information technology organizations, Mr. Kappel  currently serves as co-chair of the Network Certification Work Group of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, chair of the Policy Committee of the Alliance (National Alliance for Healthcare Information Technology) and member of the HIMSS EHR Vendor Association.

Mr. Kappel earned a bachelors degree in psychology from the College of William and Mary and a Masters degree in finance and healthcare administration from Cornell University.
