Dr. Jeffrey L. Kang, Chief Medical Officer for CIGNA HealthCare, is responsible for the company's medical strategy and policy. This include evidence-based coverage decisions, benefit design, consumer decision-support, disease management, case management, utilization management, quality measurement and improvement, clinical integration, and provider rewards strategy.
CIGNA HealthCare currently provides medical coverage through managed care and indemnity programs to approximately 9 million people.
Prior to joining CIGNA HealthCare, Dr. Kang was the Chief Clinical Officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS formerly HCFA). There he was responsible for Medicare technology assessment and coverage policy; setting quality standards for Medicare participating hospitals and facilities, leading CMS's quality measurement, improvement and patient safety activities, managing Medicares Peer Review Program and leading the Agencys overall clinical direction and purchasing initiatives.
His career began at the Urban Medical Group in Boston, as a practicing physician and Executive Director. The Group is a private group practice that specializes in care for the chronically ill in both fee-for-service and capitated environments.
Currently he is: a member of the Institute of Medicines, Subcommittee on Quality Improvement Organizations Evaluation; a co-chair of the National Quality Forums (NQF) Steering Committee for Standardizing Ambulatory Care (physician) Performance Measurement; a member of the NQFs Board of Directors; and a member of the eHealth Initiatives Board of Directors.
Dr. Kang is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics (added qualifications) and was on the Clinical Faculty at Harvard Medical School. He received his M.D. from U.C. San Francisco, M.P.H from U.C. Berkeley.
