Ileana L. Piña, MD, a Veterans Affairs National Quality Scholar, has served as Director for the following institutions: The Exercise Laboratory of the University of Miami,  Heart Failure and Cardiac Rehabilitation at Hahnemann University, Cardiomyopathy at Temple University, Heart Failure Transplantation at University Hospitals Health System and is currently a Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. 

Dr. Piña was also the principal investigator in multiple heart failure trials including PRECISE (carvedilol), ELITE (losartan), and ATLAS (lisinopri); and served as co-investigator in others such as Bosentan, VEST and HF ACTION.  She is also a device consultant for the FDA.

Dr. Piña is Co-Director of the N-HeFT Program, sponsored by Case Western Reserve University, consisting of 34 national sites that train cardiologists and primary care physicians and their medical teams to improve care for heart failure patients. Dr. Pia has authored numerous publications in the area of heart failure, exercise and gender differences and collaborated to establish the HFSA Heart Failure Guidelines. 

Dr. Piña edited the book Exercise and Heart Failure and The Year in Heart Failure 2004. She also reviewed for Circulation, American Journal of Cardiology, and American Heart Journal.  She sits on the editorial boards of, Journal of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Current Cardiology Reports.
