Michael A. Caligiuri, MD graduated from St. Joseph 's Collegiate Institute in 1974. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities and Health Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo and graduated summa cum laude. He then attended Stanford University School of Medicine where he obtained a Masters degree in Physiology and his Medical Doctorate in 1983. Dr. Caligiuri next trained at Harvard Medical School where he did his internal medicine residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and fellowships in Medical Oncology and Tumor Immunology at The Dana Farber Cancer Institute. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1989, and moved to Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine as an assistant professor of medicine in 1990. Dr. Caligiuri became a tenured full professor of medicine in seven years during which time he developed his research focus in immunology and leukemia.

In 1997 he moved to The Ohio State University (OSU) where he was named the Nationwide Insurance Enterprise Foundation Chair in Cancer Research, became the Associate Director for the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Director of the Cancer Center's Immunology Program, and a Cancer Genetics Scholar. Dr. Caligiuri served as the Director of Hematology and Oncology at The Ohio State University from 2000 through 2007. On July 1, 2003, Dr. Caligiuri was appointed as the Director of The OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center. On January 7, 2008, Dr. Caligiuri was named the CEO of The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Since 1990, over 100 students have trained in the Caligiuri laboratory and have received over 60 university, state, national or international awards for their research. He has designed and conducted over 20 clinical studies for leukemia and lymphoma patients and has over 400 original publications, abstracts and review articles on immunology or leukemia.

Dr. Caligiuri has received the Freireich Award for outstanding achievements in research from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 1998 and the Distinguished University Scholar Award from The Ohio State University in 2002, and the John Wayne Award for Clinical Research from the Society of Surgical Oncology in 2008. In 2010 Dr. Caligiuri received a MERIT award from the National Cancer Institute for his work in human immunology, the first ever awarded at OSU. Currently, Dr. Caligiuri has over $15 million dollars in funding from the National Cancer Institute for his research in immunology and leukemia. In 2010, The Ohio State University broke ground on a $1 billion expansion of the cancer program, including a new 300 bed James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute to be completed in early 2014. In 2011, under Dr. Caligiuri's leadership, the OSUCCC's P30 Core Grant received a merit descriptor of "exceptional" from the National Cancer Institute.
