The eHealth Initiative Adopts the Information Therapy Action Alliance

WASHINGTON, D.C. – NOVEMBER 24, 2009 – Last week the eHealth Initiative (eHI) took a significant step forward in supporting patient-centered health information technology efforts, announcing that it will adopt the Information Therapy Action (IxAction) Alliance, effective immediately. The IxAction Alliance resides at the intersection of patient-centered care and health information technology, focusing on issues relating to the prescription and use of targeted health information to help people make good health decisions and lead healthy lives.

“This adoption will enable eHI to build on its existing experience and further embrace a patient-centered focus as a key component of eHI’s work to promote an information-driven healthcare system,” said Jennifer Covich Bordenick, Chief Operating Officer of the eHealth Initiative.  “In turn, eHI will be able leverage its broad-based membership spanning every sector of the healthcare community and its leadership in using health information technology to drive improvements in healthcare as a means to expand the reach and impact of the IxAction Alliance.”

eHI’s adoption of the IxAction Alliance, which was previously operated by the Center for Information Therapy (IxCenter), comes on the heels of the announcement that the IxCenter will be ceasing operations as its founder and president, Joshua Seidman, PhD, moves to the federal Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology to help lead government efforts around consumer engagement and the meaningful use of electronic health records. eHI will also absorb the intellectual property of the IxCenter.

Information Therapy (Ix) is the timely prescription and availability of evidence-based health information to meet individuals' specific needs and support sound decision making.  “Much like prescriptions for medication,” Covich Bordenick said, “Ix prescriptions are specifically targeted to an individual's needs at a particular moment in care and are delivered as part of the process of care.”

The IxAction Alliance will be run within eHI as a separate program, maintaining its identity and its websites (www.IxCenter.org and www.IxAction.org). However, eHI will leverage its own resources, membership, and reputation in seeking out ways to grow the IxAction Alliance and to advance its mission. eHI will be working in the coming weeks to provide opportunities for strong and continuous interaction between eHI members and IxAction Alliance supporters, including opportunities for organizations to concurrently participate in eHI and Alliance work.
